QA-96, 7 October 2020, Statement of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hami Aksoy In Response to a Question Regarding Turkey’s National Statement on the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Delivered at the Third Committee Meeting During the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 07.10.2020

As a country having ethnic, religious and cultural ties with the Uyghur Turks, we attach special importance to their well-being, security, prosperity and happiness. We always follow closely and with utmost care the developments regarding our Uyghur brothers.

We voice our expectations regarding the situation of Uyghur Turks and other Muslim minorities both at the bilateral level with China as well as at the international platforms in a clear and transparent manner. In this context, we always keep on the agenda that fundamental rights and freedoms of the Uyghur Turks and other Muslim minorities should be respected, in particular their freedom of religion and belief.

This principled stance was presented in our national statement delivered by the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the UN at the meeting of the Third Committee, responsible for Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Issues, held during the seventy-fifth session of the UN General Assembly on the 6th of October. Turkey has a national stance on this issue. Therefore, Turkey delivered a national statement. In our statement, we expressed our concern on human rights practices against the Uyghur Turks and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, which appeared in the recent news and reports. Moreover, our expectation that Uyghur Turks and other Muslim minorities live in peace and prosperity as equal citizens of China, and that their cultural and religious identities are respected and guaranteed has been firmly emphasized once more. Our views are reflected in our national statement in detail.
